Required Ingredients & Instruments:
- Tylenol regular strength 325 mg tablets or Tylenol extra strength 500 mg tablets (be sure you get the hard tablets, not the gel capsules)
- A knife
- A hammer, or other tool to crush Tylenol tablets.
- A sandwich bag
- Sweetened yogurt, Apple sauce, or other sweet sauce-like food for mixing the Tylenol.
Instructions On Dosing Tylenol Tablets:
- Look at Table A and based on your child’s age [Column A] or weight [Column B], determine the amount of regular strength 325 mg Tylenol [C] or extra strength 500 mg Tylenol [D] required. For example, a 2 year old child weighing approximately 13 kgs (29 lbs) would require 160 mg of acetaminophen, which is roughly equivalent to half a 325 mg tablet.
- Using a knife, cut the tablets into the fractions indicated in Column [C] or [D].
- Place the cut tablets into a sandwich bag, and using a hammer, gently crush the Tylenol into a fine powder.
- Mix the powder contents into a sweet sauce food mixture, such as sweetened yogurt or apple sauce. Tylenol has a bitter taste and the food helps to mask the flavor.
- Feed the Tylenol food mixture to your child.
- Give every 4 to 6 hours for fever or pain. Do not exceed more than 4 doses in 24 hours. Do not use Tylenol with any other medication containing acetaminophen.
- If you are unsure of how to properly dose children’s Tylenol, be sure to speak to a pharmacist or other health care professional.
