This Is What You Should Do After Your Dental Sedation Appointment For A Successful Recovery.

Whether you are having laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral sedation or IV sedation, sedation dentistry can help anxious patients relax during dental procedures. After sedation dentistry, it is important to follow these post-visit instructions to ensure an uneventful recovery period.

If you have not had your dental sedation appointment yet, please read our pre-visit instructions.

Transportation

  • You must have someone pick you up to drive you home and stay with you for several hours. The effect of the sedative drugs lasts 2-6 hours following your dental visit.
  • You must have a responsible adult with you to drive you home at the end of your visit and look after you for the rest of the day. Do not plan to drive, ride transit or walk home alone after sedation.
  • You should not go up and down stairs unattended. Always hold onto a responsible adult chaperone until you are fully recovered when walking. Try to stay on the ground floor until fully recovered.

Food

  • There are no restrictions on when or what you can eat after a dental sedation appointment. Drink plenty of fluids.

Medications

  • Take all your normal medications as directed that you normally would, unless otherwise advised by your doctor or dentist. If there have been any recent changes in your medications or health status, please inform your dentist.
  • No sedatives or stimulants should be taken for 24 hours after the appointment (including alcohol, caffeine or nicotine).

Work Obligations

  • Do not make any important business decisions or sign any legal documents for 24 hours after sedation.

Other Precautions

Depending on what dental procedures was performed, additional precautions will apply:
