What to Expect During the Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure
At Atlas Dental, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Here’s how we make your procedure as painless as possible:
Topical Numbing Gel First
Before we administer any injection, we apply a topical numbing cream to the gums. This helps reduce the sting of the local anesthetic needle and eases you into the procedure more comfortably.
Local Anesthetic for Complete Numbness
We then carefully administer local anesthetic to fully numb the area around your wisdom tooth. Most patients feel only pressure—not pain—during the procedure.
We Confirm You’re Fully Numb Before Starting
Before any tooth removal begins, Dr. Nguy will personally check to ensure the area is completely numb. If you still feel any sensation, we’ll pause immediately and administer more anesthetic. Even during the procedure, if you experience discomfort, just raise your hand to let us know—we’ll stop and ensure you’re fully comfortable before continuing.
Sedation Options for Anxious Patients
If you’re nervous or have dental anxiety, we offer sedation options to help you stay calm:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide sedation is a mild sedative that helps you relax while staying fully awake. It wears off quickly, and you can usually drive home afterward.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is a prescription medication taken before your appointment to help you feel deeply relaxed. You’ll remain conscious but much less aware of the procedure. A companion will be needed to drive you home.
We can also combine both methods for patients with higher levels of anxiety or for more complex extractions.
Will I Feel Pain After the Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure?
Once the anesthetic wears off, some soreness, swelling, or tightness in the jaw is expected—but the pain is usually very manageable. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions and we may recommend:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- Cold compresses to reduce swelling
- A soft food diet and limited activity for a few days
